iPhone 12 review, is really worth it ?

What's up my friends ?! Today I have an iPhone 12 with me. I feel like its pretty familiar to me, because of the rounded corners, lightning cables and notch. But there are couple key changes in this years iPhone. The stunning look and design makes the iPhone 12 ever time favorite of mine.

I really love the super flat design of new iPhone. It is so flat, it's not the typical but almost flat where the screen is flat right up to the edges. It has 6.1 inches oleophobic coated true tone display. The phone feels light in hand (164g) and 7.4mm thickness which is super thin comparing to the last years iPhone. The square sides actually is an efficient way to pack all the internal components and 2815 mah battery. Battery life on this device is pretty good, but not noticeably better than last year at all. Its actually a slightly larger higher resolution display (1170 x 2532 pixels, 19.5:9 ratio ~460 ppi density) and smaller physical batteries. so its pretty impressive that the phone still capable with 6hrs of screen on time.

On top of all that, the device looks and feels super premium & modern. The iPhone 12 comes with five different  color variants Black, White, Red, Green, Blue. After seeing all the versions I Personally prefer to go with blue or black color. The device is really greppable (146.7 x 71.5 x 7.4 mm), the buttons are clicky, the power button is little bit bigger, it still have IP68 dust/water resistant (up to 6m for 30 mins). We will discuss all such things, so stay tuned with me. I love to hold this phone more time, I don't know why. If you put a case on that, it doesn't matter that much. Because some cases flattening their dimensions for this iPhone 12, so that will again make it easier to grip and harder to drop.

When we talk about dropping, all these iPhone comes with ceramic shield on the front. Basically its a specialty hardened kind of glass with crystal structure inside it and its placed over the screen. It supposed to offer four times better drop protection, precisely shatter protection. This is great, but I typically care about the scratch resistance all the little micro scratches that phones gathers over time. The thing about scratch resistance is typically inversely proportional to shatter resistance.

I saw the headline of better drop protection in apple event, that's great. But now I am not gonna drop my phone and find out if it works, I am sure people are already on that. There are some scratches on my screen at level 6, so I am feeling that iPhone is not significantly more scratch resistant than before. There are lot of dropping will happen. If it dropped in a certain way its gonna crack. If it dropped in an another way, probably not going to crack!. I don't have much idea about that, I recommend you to use better case and a screen protector.

The biggest external hardware feature of the new iPhone is magsafe. Personally i love the magsafe, thanks to the apple for that. Magsafe is the optional new magnetic charging accessories standard on the back, just right behind the apple logo. I think it has bigger implications for the future of iPhone. The magsafe accessories that apple sells is the charger only, it doesn't come with the USB cable. If you planning to buy a charger make sure that you have a USB type c charging cable. Magsafe charges at 15 watt and every other wireless charger on iPhone charges still at 7.5 watts, that's really nice.

You can charge the device with other wireless chargers and you can use the magsafe to charge other android phones. There are some durability concerns like magsafe leaving marks on iPhone, but I don't think it is a long term problem. It just wipe off every time. Apple probably tested this a 100 thousand times and probably determined that its not an issue. You can do magsafe charge through most non - magsafe cases as long as they are thin enough.

The actual best new thing of iPhone 12 is definitely the new eye catchy display. Super Retina XDR OLED, HDR10, 6.1 inches display with ~86.0% screen-to-body ratio really surprising me . It actually have just a lower peak brightness. I feels like 120 hertz display is a missing feature on this 800$ phone in 2020. Maybe be they saw that this as a battery saving measure since this phone also have the 5G. I was just thinking that the pro version would get a 120 hertz display in this year.

Now lets talk about 5G. '5G just got real' I saw this slogan in apple launch event. 5G in 2020 has its ups and downs. Now most of the phones out there have 5g in it, so its not a surprising one. 5g radios are pretty power hungry, the more time you spend on 5G the more battery you bleed through.

Apple have a solution on this power consumption which is called smart data mode & i saw it on stage during the event. Basically it tries only use 5G when you actually need it. It will help to save battery. The device actually still shows you the 5G indicator in the right corner but you will get 4g speed. I would say don't buy this phone now because of you want get a 5g phone. If you get this phone now then maybe it will be a nice bonus if you are in a 5g area or in future when you end up in a 5G area you'll be able to use that too.

New iPhone equals to a new best camera ever. iPhone 12 got a slightly updated dual camera system with a standard and an ultrawide. The standard has a slightly wider aperture at f1.6. To be honest, there is not much difference in camera. The hardware improvements are almost impossible to notice in regular photos but they will get you an improvement in the some other cases. The most difficult photo and video taking scenarios like handheld in low light & night mode will be better. Auto focus on fast moving subjects & super high dynamic range shots like shooting straight to the sun is possible with HDR3, thanks to smart HDR3.

Other than that it still looks like an iPhone photo, which is some of the absolute best and most consistent crisp photos in any smartphones. But what about video shooting ? The video camera is so much better. People care lot about video, they take a lot of videos so you'd want to know that the iPhone takes great video. Despite that iPhone not shooting 8k and not having a huge new sensor or anything crazy like that. Its just so fine tuned and so reliable

You might have heard about Dolby vision HDR, these new iPhone cameras are the first and the only cameras in the world to shoot 10 bit high dynamic range Dolby vision 4k video and that's awesome. HDR videos are awesome higher brighter brights deeper shadows overall better images even better perceived quality. Dolby vision is just one HDR standard or format by Dolby and there are other HDR standards that have been out you might heard of HDR 10 is one of them.

Anyway the rest of the iPhone is pretty familiar and that's a good thing for the most of people. We have all seen iOS 14 by now so its familiar. Face id is completely unchanged even in the performance there is nothing super new like high refresh rate. There is a new A14 bionic chip inside, which is one of the very first 5nm chips in any device. Which has a more powerful CPU and GPU and is paired with 4Gb of ram. But fundamentally there is isn't really that much of a difference in the iPhone 12 and the performance you get this year versus last year, just a little bit faster.

The apple website shows 800$ as the price, even that price this phone with best in class cameras & performance, the screen is pretty damn good. Its a great new phone, the best new part of it are definitely the new display which was a huge improvement from the last year. Battery life is about to same camera are little bit better, build quality and design are awesome, magsafe is an optional for now. The worst part is the price is little higher and 5G. 5G is also built in to the phone even for the people who are never going to use it. Anyway thanks for reading, catch you guys on the next one.
